Kansas City

Mark Funkhouser suffered another defeat at the hands of the City Council on Thursday. Everyone deserves their day in court but Funk was handed a political decision in closed council chambers. The council voted 7-3 (Funkhouser abstained) to settle the discrimination lawsuit with former aid, Ruth Bates, for $550,000--up from the original $30,000 settlement negotiated between attorneys in the case. That settlement was blown up when Funkhouser, who somehow managed to lose most of the political insight that got him elected in the first place, decided to release a press release publicly slamming the plaintiff within hours of the first settlement.

Do the math. $550,000 minus $30,000 equals $520,000. That's the amount that the council was willing to pay to sink any chance the Mayor might have had at a second term. For a guy touted to be 'smart with the money' the Mayor has squandered KC's on more than one occasion. Remember the La Raza incident? That one cost the city several million dollars in lost tourism dollars. Being stubborn can turn a person into an intractable idiot.

Will Funkhouser ever realize that being Mayor should be less about him (or her!) and more about The City? In the operatic theater of KC politics "it ain't over till the fat lady sings" (how very true in this case) but the brightest future for the Mayor will likely be the candlelit confines of his rustic Ozark cabin. Maybe there will enough chinks between the logs to let some illuminating shafts of light leak into his life.

KC Green Summit by Warrior Ant Press Worldwide Anthill Headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, USA.

The 2008 Kansas City Green Summit will be held April 25. The City, which has declared its intent to be a leader in the public realm of green infrastruture, will soon be facing billion dollar challenges that can allow this to happen. The momentum can advance beyond rhethoric, but citizens will have to keep pushing because there's a long hike ahead of us. The City hopes to build a new model for doing business, one that can enchance neighborhoods, the quality of life, and build the economy.

KC Green Summit 2008, being held Friday at Bartle Hall, 301 W. 13th St, the city's first LEED certified silver building, will offer opportunities for citizens to learn how the city plans on being a truly Green city. Speakers at the event include Majora Carter, executive director of Sustainable South Bronx and one of the 25 most influential African-Americans of 2007, U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II, City Manager Wayne Cauthen, and architect Bob Berkibile.

The summit will include professional presentations about green solutions and green infrastructure and will feature exhibits by local companies and corporations that currently utilize green solutions. For example, one can find out if green-collar jobs involve more than mowing the edges of a raingarden. An afternoon interactive session will allow participants the chance to work with elected officials, environmental professionals, and other interested citizens to help shape the future of some of the city's largest green projects.

Non-profit participants can attend for free by signing up at:

Kansas City has a new mayor today - the tallest in the land (7' 1") and perhaps the most transparent, Mark Funkhouser. He's promised to listen to the regular folks, not look down upon them, and open up government and I believe he's earnest. There is so much to do in the city in the next few years and trying to find the money and consensus to do it all, well let's hope those auditor skills, love for Abraham Lincoln, and risk-taking take root among all the people. Mark does believe, and repeatedly reminds everyone that the people own the government and THEY have to decide how to make their city a better place. The mayor can only facilitate the process. If you're a total kc politico-geek you can read or listen to his acceptance speech.
Did the previous mayor, Kay Barnes, ever quote anyone other than a sports figure during her tenue? Don't know, but moi is fairly certain that Mayor Barnes didn't quote Kennedy, Disraeli, and John Winthrop in the same speech. Here's to change.

the funkster by Warrior Ant Press Worldwide Anthill Headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, USA.

Kansas City will soon have a new mayor. Mayor-elect Funkhouser, aka the Funkster, Lurch, the big lug (as his wife calls him). Hasn't even taken office yet and already he's made his first rookie mistake. The Funkster, who m.o.i. heartily supported in the campaign, tapped his close friend and confidante Ed Wolf to be his chief of staff. Problem. Mr. Wolf, who retired from Director of Public Works for the City 4 years ago ran straight away into one of KC archaic laws. Seems that you have to be retired for at least 5 years before working again for the city. Oops! It's ok to retire and be hired as a consultant. Many former employee immediately jump on the consultant gravy train within months of retirement, but to enter again into public service with the city, this will require a change in the city charter. Time for compromise as Mayor-elect Funkhouser insists that Ed is the man for the job. Wonder what the current mayor, and departing council (5 of whom got soundly trounced by the Funky grassroots campaign) will demand in return for this change to the charter. More tax breaks for the wealthy? Ah, the art of sucking up errr politics. Here's a photo of the neophyte taking a call during his election night acceptance speech flanked by his son and wife. I love the honesty of this guy.
